  Dr. Paul Sikes

Paul SikesDr. Sikes serves as the first director of orchestras at Texas A&M University and associate director of bands. In his position at Texas A&M, Dr. Sikes conducts both the Texas A&M University Orchestra and the University Symphonic Band. Under his direction the orchestra has grown in both quality and quantity. The orchestra began as a class with 24 string players and has grown to over 70 with a full orchestra approaching 100 students. Also under his direction, the Symphonic Band has maintained its tradition of excellence by performing some of the best literature available to university concert bands. The group boasts a membership of around 85 students.

Having a wide ranging career in music, Dr. Sikes has worked with music students at every level, from beginners through university students. As a public school music teacher, he taught in Lubbock, Midland and Katy Independent School Districts. His groups consistently received the highest ratings at festivals and contests and grew in both size and quality. As a university instructor, Dr. Sikes worked with music students at Baylor University and the University of Houston.

As an active musician, Dr. Sikes continues to play and sing in various ensembles. He regularly performs on the cello, bass and trombone in small ensembles and has performed with the Midland-Odessa Symphony Orchestra and the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra. He is a tenor in his church choir and serves as assistant conductor to this group. Dr. Sikes is also in demand as judge and clinician for both orchestras and bands. In addition to his conducting duties, he has also served on the state board of directors for the Texas Music Educators Association and has presented workshops and clinics at the University of Houston, the Texas Music Educators Association, and the National Association for Music Education (MENC).

Dr. Sikes earned his Bachelor of Music in Education from Texas Tech University, his Master of Music in Conducting from Baylor University and his Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education from the University of Houston. He has a wonderful wife, Kristi, who is a school counselor in Navasota ISD.
